Nurbrgring 24 Hour Race Report (May 30, 2001)
Press Release… Press Release… Press Release… Press Release…
Weybridge based Australian Ross Buckingham had a successful debut in the Nurburgring 24 Hour Race which took place on 25/26 May finishing 3rd in class. The 1400 Caterham 7 shared with James Auld and seasoned Caterham racers Adrian Watt and Mark Giles was under powered for the 2000cc class it was in and the team went to the German circuit fully expecting not to qualify. Ross’ qualifying run was hindered when the car stuck in 4th gear on his first lap requiring a gearbox change between qualifying sessions. The second session was stopped following a fatal shunt involving an Alfa Romeo but resumed later in the evening.
After the relief of making it to the grid the team set to work on the race, already feeling tired from the previous day’s activity. The race itself went like clockwork while other teams struggled with damage and mechanical problems the under powered car was lapping consistently throughout the race. With no un-scheduled pit stops it gradually made its way up through the field. "Everyone in the team worked really well," said Ross "we looked after the car and stayed out of trouble on the track and that paid off. We couldn’t have expected a better result on our first attempt at this race"
